The direct-vent system involves two parts, one part for the exhaust and one for combustion air intake. The appliance itself is a completely sealed combustion chamber and air from the house is not used for combustion. The exhaust vents can go out through a sidewall or through the roof.
Pros: Combustion fumes are vented outside which reduces harmful fumes inside of the home. Allows a simple installation in cases where the vent it going out a wall and terminates at the wall. No need to terminate above the roof line as is necessary with b-vent or wood burning applications resulting in relatively low venting costs.
Cons: Direct vent fireplaces have a sealed glass front and the position and look of the logs in the fireplace cannot be altered or incomplete combustion will occur. A vent-free fireplace does not require venting which allows consumers more flexibility in where they place their fireplace. The burner of the fireplace or gas log set is designed to be 99%+ efficient, therefore there is no need to vent the appliance.
Pros: Ease of installation and lowered cost since vent pipe is not needed. Vent-free products are typically the most efficient of all fireplaces or gas logs since all the heat is generated into the room or home.
Cons: Combustion fumes are vented inside the home which affect some people who are very sensitive to smell or allergies. Vent-free products expel a fair amount of moisture as a result of the burn process which also is expelled into the home. This can be problematic especially in a sunroom or room with a lot of windows. Moisture build up may cause continuous dripping in these areas. Typically there is a low flame with vent-free products and the placement of the burner or logs are set by the manufacturer and cannot be changed or altered.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”ARE GAS LOGS EXPENSIVE TO OPERATE?” tab_id=”1491241814263-675cb8b9-765a”][vc_column_text]Gas logs are typically inexpensive to operate because the primary purpose is to create an aesthetically pleasing ambiance within your home. The cost of operation depends on the amount of use and the fuel being used. Natural gas is a relatively inexpensive fuel source. Consider the cost and time of ordering, delivering, and stacking firewood. Then consider that this needs to be done on a yearly basis for as long as wood is used. Compare this to the one time cost and set up of a gas log set. If a gas company charges less than a dollar per Therm, ccf or 100,000 BTU, and the BTU rating of the set is under 100,000 BTU, the cost per hour will be less than a dollar.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”WHAT ARE FIREPLACE INSERTS?” tab_id=”1491241736685-b779fe95-366e”][vc_column_text]A fireplace insert is an appliance designed to be inserted into an existing wood fireplace. The type of insert is dependent upon the fuel choice, wood, pellet and gas are the most common fuel sources. A fireplace insert is designed to be an efficient heater and should be EPA certified.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”DO I NEED FLOOR PROTECTION UNDER MY WOOD STOVE?” tab_id=”1491241903238-d16c40de-56c3″][vc_column_text]Floor protection is required for your wood stove unless you are installing it on an existing hearth or non-combustable surface. Consult your owner’s manual to determine your required dimensions.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”HOW DO FIREPLACES COMPARE TO WOOD STOVES? ARE THEY AS EFFICIENT?” tab_id=”1491241932726-715fdad3-0eb2″][vc_column_text]Generally, fireplaces are not an efficient means of burning wood. They do not burn as cleanly as an EPA-certified wood stove. Furthermore, fireplaces provide less heat to your home, since most of the heat from a fireplace goes out the chimney. Most fireplace owners do not use their fireplaces as a primary source of heat. They may burn wood in their fireplace as supplemental heat on chilly days, or to provide ambiance to their home. For more efficient heating with less smoke, consider having a gas, pellet, or EPA-certified wood fireplace insert installed in your fireplace. However, some fireplaces are available that are both energy efficient and meet the EPA certification standards.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”WHAT IS A BTU (BRITISH THERMAL UNIT)?” tab_id=”1491241956876-c185143e-8414″][vc_column_text]A standard of measurement which represents the heat value of any type of energy used to create heat. Yes, no matter what anybody tells you the state of Michigan requires a permit to be pulled for new installations of gas, wood and pellet appliances. Additionally, many insurance companies require that new hearth appliances are inspected by a licensed inspector and a mechanical permit has been issued.
